1. What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy comes from the Greek word ‘ homeo’ means similar and ‘ pathos’ means suffering. Homeopathy is a natural, alternative system of medicine, which was founded by the German physician Dr. Hahnemann in 1790. Dr. Hahnemann was a very famous physician of the then dominant school of medicine. He was a successful practitioner, but deep within he was very troubled by the limited amount of useful medical knowledge of his times. He realized that, the ‘medical science’ is not based on any fundamental scientific laws. And the theories on which the medicine of his time was based were vague and hypothetical. And the treatment often caused more harm than good. So he left his medical practice and started translation Work instead. After a lot of dedicated work he concluded that this is a general law and called it ‘Similia Similibus Curantur’ , i.e.; ‘Like Cures Like’ – the fundamental principle on which Homeopathy is based.

This law has been confirmed by people since then and has been found to be working well. This was a strong foundation and a lot of work has gone into further development of Homeopathy in the past 200 years. The work and growth of Homeopathy is still going on and at a very rapid pace. And as the physical basis of this science is becoming clear, it’s acceptance is growing.

It has micro doses of substances extracted from plant, animal or mineral kingdom. By the process of individualization these dynamic doses initiate the healing process which is completed by the persons immunity system itself. Homeopathy rests on the principle “Like Cures Like.” This means that a disease can be cured by a medicine that is capable of producing symptoms similar to those experienced by the patient in a healthy person. Therefore the most important part of homeopathic treatment lies in the lengthy interview which the homeopath conducts with the patient in order to dequesine all the symptoms which the patient is experiencing. The homeopath then decides which medicine to prescribe based on the closest match between the patient’s symptoms and the known symptoms elicited by the medicine in a healthy body.

People suffering from all kinds of illnesses, from arthritis to migraine, depression to ulcers, can be helped by homeopathy in regaining their health. Since different people react to the same illness in different ways, a homeopath approaches patients in a holistic manner. The physical, emotional and mental state of each person are connected. Homeopaths understand that symptoms of disease are evidence of the body’s natural immune systems response to healing itself and these clues are used to guide them when prescribing a remedy.

2. What are homeopathic medicines?

Medicines are derived from vegetable, animal and mineral sources. They are prepared by process called potentization, whereby the original substance undergoes a series of dilutions and succussion, reducing the side-effects of crude medicines and paradoxically increasing the strength of the resulting product. Homeopathy has been developed by over 200 years of clinical experience and is used worldwide.Homeopathy asserts that this process can maintain a substance’s healing properties regardless of how many times it has been diluted. Many homeopathic remedies are so highly diluted that not one molecule of the original natural substance remains.12,21 Remedies are sold in liquid, pellet, and tablet forms.

3. How do homoeopathic medicines work?

The theory behind the working of Homeopathy is that the body of every human being contains a vital force within the body which regulates the functioning of the body. Due to reasons such as heredity, environmental conditions, stress etc, this vital force weaken causing disease. So, disease is nothing but a mixture of certain symptoms observed in the human body. The Homeopathic physician make a study of not only the symptoms the patient is complaining of, but of the entire patient himself. This leads to a picture of the patient. The physician then prescribes Homeopathic medicine.

Homeopathic medicines act by stimulating body’s own defense mechanism to correct the process which has lead to the disease condition. According to our current understanding, the medicines act as a electromagnetic signal, which is picked up by nerves and relayed to higher centers of the brain, which in turn stimulates our bodies healing powers to take specific corrective measures. Medicines tells the body to do it’s work by itself. It helps the body to take over it’s self healing process.

4. How long does the treatment take?

This depends on what sort of illness you have, as well as the other individual characteristics of your case. So it is not realistic for your Homeopath to assess this until it can be seen how you respond to the remedies prescribed over some time. It is possible to say that a slowly developing complaint, or one that has been experienced for some years, will not disappear immediately although there may be a response and some improvement quite soon. Other acute complaints may get better more quickly.

The success of homeopathic medicine depends on the situation and how closely homeopathic rules are followed. In addition, for the most part, the duration of the healing process is proportional to the duration of your ailment. A chronic condition can be cured effectively, but not overnight.

5. How do I take the medicine?

It depends on what type of medicine you are using. Typically with single remedies, the pellets or tablets dissolve in the mouth or under the tongue. King Bio Sprays are sprayed under the tongue for fast relief. Food should not be taken with medicines. Certain sprays, gels, and lotions should be applied topically.
Rules for Taking Homeopathic Remedies :

Take nothing by mouth 10-20 minutes before and after the medicine. This includes food, drink, chewing gum, toothpaste etc.
Limit as much as possible caffeine in any forms, such as soft drinks, coffee, or chocolate.
No camphor, such as in muscle and joint rubs. Avoid moth ball fumes.
Limit contact with cigarette smoke, especially menthol as much as possible.

6. What are potencies?

The remedies we use come from many sources. Most are derived from plants, but minerals, metals, animal products, and even some poisons, which have been used medicinally for generations, are also used.

A special process called “potentisation” is, wherein the crude medicinal substances are serially diluted and “energized”. The dilution is frequently so great that no chemical trace of the original substance remains. However the characteristic energy pattern or the blue print of the original substance is imprinted onto the dilution. This process is very much akin to the radio or television signals, where the original program or scene is converted in to an electromagnetic energy pattern or signal which is transmitted to a receiver.

Potencies are how much strength is available in a homeopathic medicine. Homeopathic medicine consists of natural substances that are extremely diluted. These dilutions, stimulate the defense system of your body. The amount of dilution is called potency. The lowest potency scale is X. A medicine with 30X has more strength than a medicine with 6X. The C scale is a higher potency than X. Depending on your condition, a doctor may prescribe a dilution of X (decimal), C (centesimal), or M (millennial). M is the strongest and an extension of the C scale.

7. Do homeopathic medicines have side effects?

Homeopathy influences the body’s energy rather than its chemical balance. Hence, the remedies do not cause side effects since there is no chemical trace to accumulate in the tissues. For the same reasons, it is not possible to take an overdose of homeopathic medicine in the same way as in allopathic medicine (which works on a chemical level) Homeopathic remedies are therefore not intrinsically dangerous. Yet, they are capable in stimulating the body’s reactive forces powerfully and should be treated with respect.

Here is some general information that has been reported about risks and side effects in homeopathy:

Homeopathic medicines in high dilutions, taken under the supervision of trained professionals, are considered safe and unlikely to cause severe adverse reactions.
Some patients report feeling worse for a brief period of time after starting homeopathic remedies. Homeopaths interpret this as the body temporarily stimulating symptoms while it makes an effort to restore health.
Liquid homeopathic remedies can contain alcohol and are permitted to have higher levels of alcohol than conventional drugs for adults. This may be of concern to some consumers. However, no adverse effects from the alcohol levels have been reported.
Homeopathic remedies are not known to interfere with conventional drugs; however, if you are considering using homeopathic remedies, you should discuss this with your doctor.

8. Can we take homeopathic medicines with conventional medicines?

Homeopathic medicines act on the immune system and generally can be safely taken along with conventional medicines. However, there arises a problem for the homeopath in the assessment of symptoms in a heavily medicated patient. Homeopaths generally like to treat patients who are giving them clear symptom pictures. It can be problematic to distinguish these symptoms in a heavily medicated patient. Having said that, if a patient is being treated with both forms of medicines, as the homeopathic improves the state of the patient, conventional medicines can be reduced. Many conventional doctors will work hand-in-hand with alternative practitioners and will often recommend homeopathy when faced with patients who don’t seem to improve using conventional approaches.

9. Is Homoeopathy holistic?

Homeopathy is holistic medicine. Homeopaths do not treat physical, emotional and mental illnesses separately, but regard them as intimately connected. These are all aspects of the whole of the patient’s suffering. Further, they understand that symptoms of illnesses are evidence of the body’s natural and automatic efforts to heal itself. These clues are used to guide them when prescribing a remedy.

Homeopathy considers the whole person. The classical homeopaths first will learn from the patient the complete history of the disorder. They will take a good look at the investigations that were done and the treatment prescribed, and then ascertain whether the patient can be treated with homeopathy alone, or if they should be advised to use homeopathic medicines along with other medicines.

Patients sometimes complain that their regular doctor will ignore complaints about symptoms that the patient thinks need attention. The emphasis by regular doctors is on diagnosis only and the seemingly irrelevant, minor complaints that the patient notices are often totally ignored. The homeopathic system, however, pays attention to, understands and interprets these minor symptoms as being very relevant and important aspects of the disorder that the patient is suffering from. That is what will individualise the patient. Homeopathy’s greatest successes have been when the concerned doctor has correctly interpreted the various signs and symptoms (after exhaustive and detailed case taking, especially in chronic disorders), and then matched them with the drug provings and prescribed accordingly.

10. Can homoeopathy treat side effects of vaccinations?

Interestingly, homeopathy has been compared by analogy with vaccination. The use of micro-doses of a substance to improve immunity is the foundation of homeopathy. However, the difference lies in the preparation of homeopathics. Many people who react badly to vaccinations have found relief in homeopathy.

11. How long does it take to see results after homeopathic medicine?

This entirely depends on the health of the patient and the chronicity of complaints. A patient who is generally very weak and exhausted with a complaint of many years duration will take longer to heal than a person with a recent complaint and with generally a very high vitality. The medicines are taken in small quantity and over limited periods of time, usually at most a week or two. Then the homeopath will like to wait and see the effects of the medicine before increasing the dosage or perhaps changing the medicine as new symptom pictures arise. The goal is to treat the patient in as short a time and with as little medicine as possible to affect a cure. There is no such thing as taking homeopathy indefinitely.
